How long do Snapchat stories last? The short answer: a standard story disappears 24 hours after it is posted. But that is only one of several content types on Snapchat, and saved stories, highlights, and Spotlight clips all follow different rules. Here is the complete breakdown, plus what expiry means for viewers and downloaders.
The 24-Hour Rule for Standard Stories
When someone posts a regular story, Snapchat starts a 24-hour countdown. During that window, the story is viewable by its intended audience, appears on the poster's profile, and can be fetched by tools like the anonymous story viewer. The moment the 24 hours end, Snapchat removes the story from its servers. After expiry, the story cannot be viewed, replayed, or recovered by anyone, including the person who posted it, unless they saved it first. This is the hard deadline behind every 'story not found' message.
Saved Stories and Highlights Last Indefinitely
Creators with public profiles can save stories to their profile as highlights. Unlike regular stories, these do not expire after 24 hours. They stay on the public profile until the creator deletes them, which means they remain viewable for weeks, months, or years. Our highlights viewer exists precisely for this content: long-lived story collections that outlast the daily cycle. If you are researching a creator rather than catching today's update, highlights are usually the richer source.
Spotlight Clips Have Their Own Lifespan
Spotlight videos live in Snapchat's Spotlight feed rather than on the 24-hour story cycle. They remain available as long as Snapchat keeps them in the feed and the creator does not remove them. Because Spotlight is public-facing short video, these clips are also fetchable by viewers; see the Spotlight downloader and our Spotlight vs Stories comparison for details.
What Expiry Means for Anonymous Viewing
Expiry is the most common reason a viewer returns nothing. If you search a username and see 'no public stories found,' the likeliest explanation is simply that the creator has not posted within the last 24 hours, or the account is private. It does not mean the tool is broken. Before troubleshooting further, check whether the profile has saved highlights, which persist beyond the 24-hour window, and read our not working guide if the problem continues.
Can Expired Stories Be Recovered or Downloaded
No. Once a standard story expires without being saved, it is gone from Snapchat's servers and cannot be retrieved by the poster, by viewers, or by downloader tools. This is why downloading matters: a saved copy is the only version that survives expiry, and downloading only works while the story is still live.
Timing tip: creators in different time zones post on their own schedule. If a public profile shows no current story, check back in a few hours rather than assuming the viewer failed. The 24-hour window is rolling, not fixed to your local midnight.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Snapchat stories really disappear after 24 hours?
Yes. Standard stories are automatically removed from Snapchat's servers 24 hours after posting. After that point nobody can view, replay, or download them, including the poster, unless the story was saved as a highlight or downloaded beforehand. This deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.
Why can I still see old stories on some profiles?
Those are saved stories or highlights, which creators pin to their public profile. Unlike regular stories, highlights do not expire after 24 hours and stay visible until the creator deletes them. They are a separate content type with a separate lifespan.
Can I view a Snapchat story after it expires?
No. Expired standard stories are deleted from Snapchat's servers and cannot be recovered by any viewer or downloader. The only exceptions are stories the creator saved as highlights, or copies someone downloaded while the story was still live. Plan ahead if a story matters to you.
Does downloading a story extend how long it lasts?
Downloading saves your own copy as a JPG or MP4 file, which lasts as long as you keep it. It does not extend the story's life on Snapchat itself. Download before the 24-hour window closes, because afterwards there is nothing left to download.
How long do Spotlight videos stay up?
Spotlight clips are not bound by the 24-hour story rule. They remain in the Spotlight feed as long as Snapchat keeps them there and the creator does not remove them, which can be days, weeks, or longer. There is no fixed expiry date for Spotlight content.
